★ Peterborough Cathedral
Peterborough’s most awe-inspiring sight is its cathedral which dates to the 13th century. Its Norman architecture can still be seen, with zigzag patterns and semicircular arches on display. The cathedral is also home to Catherine of Aragon’s tomb.
★ Peterborough Museum
The town’s museum is housed in a building dating to the early 1800s. Home to over 220,000 objects that tell the story of the region and city’s natural and human history, the museum also houses a replica Victorian-era operating theatre. You can also see artworks from the 1600s to the present day as well as fossils, artefacts and Roman pottery.
★ Nene Valley Railway
The Nene Valley Station is on a fragment of railway line which once linked
Peterborough to Blisworth. First opened in 1847, this railway is now a popular
visitor attraction. Steam and diesel locomotives run during the school holidays and at weekends.
★ Longthorpe Tower
Located in the western suburbs of Peterborough, this 3 storey tower dates to the 14th century and was once part of a manor house. This grade 1 listed building is now maintained by English Heritage. Visitors can see its 14th century first floor murals which are virtually unique in the country as well as an exhibition recounting the building’s story.
★ John Clare Cottage
John Clare, the Romantic poet, was born in this thatched cottage in 1793. It is now a popular visitor attraction with rooms that have been restored to their original 19th century rustic appearance. It also has beautiful gardens, a bookshop and a café.

Right in the heart of the city, Nene Park can be found, continuing west along the Nene River’s bank for over 3 miles. Covering over 2,500 acres, the public park is home to cycling and walking paths through woodlands and meadows.

The Ferry Meadows Country Park is within the Nene Park and is a great place for families to get out and enjoy the natural environment. The lake is a perfect spot for renting rowing boats, pedal boats, paddleboards, kayaks and canoes.

Located on the eastern outskirts of the city, this Bronze Age site dates back 3,500 years. Comprising 250,000 horizontal and 60,000 vertical timbers, this prehistoric engineering feat is configured in 5 rows forming a causeway. An island part way along it was once believed to be spiritually significant. The visitor centre explains the site’s meaning and importance and houses many artefacts that were recovered from this valuable site.
★ Railworld Wildlife Haven
This nature park and railway museum is open on certain days between February and October. If you’re a model railway enthusiast or have children, you’ll love the OO model railways which changes on a yearly basis. Outdoors, the wildlife park is home to over 250 native species including hedgehogs, bees and birds.
★ Elton Hall and Gardens
Located 8 miles to the south west of the city, this baronial hall has been owned by one family since the 1660s. The architecture of the property goes back to the 15th century, with Gothic windows on its south façade. Inside, you can see artworks by Constable, Gainsborough and Renaissance masters and see one of the most impressive private libraries which includes the personal prayer book of King Henry VIII among its treasures.
